I'm all for having vaccines made in America, but not in Baltimore. There's a reason all those Hopkins NIH dollars produce so few local companies. Plus, any manufacturing there delays the bulldozing of the place that's badly needed.

Nope. That’s not what happened.
The internal controls within the Emergent Bio Solution facility detected the mix up of ingredients within a batch.
This happened way before the batch gets transported to another facility responsible for filling vials before shipping.
Obviously the, let’s call it , contaminated batch, will not be put into vials, which some have estimated could have been as many as 15 million vials.
Not clear which ingredient(s) were a part of the mix up nor the impact had existing controls been inadequate or non- existent.
In terms of a back story, J&J locked arms with Emergent Bio Solutions in April, 2020 to manufacture the vaccine, J&J was developing with Federal grants.
Records show Emergent Bio Solutions had previous citations going back years for inadequate auditing, some mold contamination within the facility and poorly trained employees. Context is needed here to determine how this citation history compares to other facilities manufacturing vaccines/ medications.
BTW, NYT broke this story as they did the Hillary email/ server story. Guess it’s only fake news when it questions Trump.

In March, 2020 J&J announced a combined investment of $1 billion with the Federal Government for R&D of a vaccine candidate. In August, J&J received a $1 billion grant to manufacture vaccine, in anticipation of completion of trials and eventual FDA approval.

Trump Admin had committed near $2 billion to J&J between March- August, 2020.
The German company BioNTech developed a vaccine and partnered with Pfizer to take it across the line and into production. It took no Federal money for R&D and trials.
For reasons unknown, the Trump Admin allowed multiple options to order beyond the initial order, back in June despite the known lead time. Speculation on my part, they may have thought it would have more options given Moderna, Merck and J&J were a part of Operation Warp speed and the Federal Government was sharing financial risks.
Merck, subsequently dropped out and Moderna and J&J took longer than expected.
Trump got a lot of mileage out of announcing there would be 100 million vaccines before year end- maybe sooner. Reality was 80 million +/- short. As we now appreciate number of vaccines = doses. Beginning in mid December, the Trump Admin gave itself and Congress, regardless of age or health, priority over most healthcare professionals and the most vulnerable in terms of opportunity to be vaccinated.
The Trump Admin did however order another 100 million doses from Pfizer on 12/23 for delivery between 6/30-7/31.
Those skeptical or opposed to the Covid vaccine cross political lines.
