Occasionally the US places sanctions against China for human rights violations or security violations. But do these sanctions have any effect on the Chinese govt? Do they even care?

Remember the Tian An Men Massacre of 1989? Of course Pres. Bush and others complained about it, said it was terrible. But the Chinese govt said and did nothing, if I recall correctly. Did the world place sanctions on China? If so, did it even have any effect?

The leaders of Europe just had a meeting about China's treatment of people in the Northwest.

Bonus question: when Carter was president, he did something regarding the relations between China and Taiwan. What was it exactly?

Sure, but only if actions are taken multilaterally. If the US AND EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA AND Korea AND Japan AND Vietnam, etc. put economic pressure on China simultaneously, we might make some progress.

That was the great folly of the Trump administration. He burned so many bridges with our allies that we were basically in it alone with tariffs, which was a huge mistake.

...i think it would bode well for americans to learn a little about chinese history, it does go back before mao...i doubt sanctions are any worry at all to the chinese, from the e.u. or the u.s...china is on a 'long plan', they have a goal, their energy is focused on that goal...

...look what just happened in the 'disputed' south china sea...that never would happen twenty years ago...

...i doubt china is worried about anything the u.s. may toss at them, after all, there are chinese military bases all over the united states...they're called 'WALMART'...the days of using guns and bombs to conquer a people are long gone...

So why didn’t Obama/Biden do it when they were in power for 8 years?

You think China magically became a powerhouse and in violation of human rights from 2016-2020?

Biden's Secretary of State has already publicly stated he won't hold China responsible for causing the Chinese Virus or demanding anything from them over it. Aside from how Biden himself supports socialism, part of it has to do with China's military strength. Let's face it, if a virus from an Iraqi or Iranian lab killed this many people, that lab would already be leveled by an airstrike, at the very least. If not complete regime change.

Nothing even about moving more manufacturing back to the US from China including changing the unfair trade agreements, after China hoarded all the PPE at the beginning for the pandemic that they caused, and the fact that's its not good for so much of our manufacturing be in a hostile communist nation.

Given Chinese culture, I'd say it's very unlikely. We might be able to accomplish something with more subtle moves, but that probably won't feel satisfactory in the short term.

Doubtful, we don’t have any real leverage over China.

While not a 'Western' philosophy, Christianity is having a positive effect in this regard, through 'Western' oriented evangelism.

When a society is taught that they were created in the image of God and have intrinsic value, said society tends to scoff at treating humans badly. Does this solve the human condition? Absolutely not, but it makes available an answer to the bigger questions in life.

I need definitive proof there is a humanitarian crisis in China. I just dont trust our MSM. They have shown over and over again, they have their own agenda to push like with George Floyd fiasco.
