This is exactly what I was thinking when I first heard the news. For all we know, he may have asked for the review to prove that he CAN'T legally forgive the loans by EO. He has still given no indication publicly that he wants to forgive 50k in student loans.

I honestly just can't believe this is being considered. Never in history has student loan been forgiven, and now $50K is even being seriously discussed????

After graduating from med school, I didn't get to live like a "doctor" for years because I wanted to pay off my loans ASAP!

Tuition for school (especially professional school) is ridiculously high, but people know that going in!!!

No way an EO can do this. Will be struck down if actually attempted. Probably just political theater.

Biden isn't considering this. It's good that you don't believe it, because it's not true.

Uhm, hyperbole much?

What is PSLF then?
And what about defrauded students who have their loans forgiven?
And teachers who work in STEM/SPED who have their loans forgiven?
And what about IBR plans that forgive loans after 20 years?

The U.S. already has student debt forgiveness—but barely anyone gets it

Quote:
The National Consumer Law Center estimates that while approximately two million student loan borrowers have been in repayment for more than 20 years, just 32 borrowers have ever qualified for loan cancellation through the federal government’s income-driven repayment program.

In 2018, the Department of Education released data that indicated 29,000 borrowers had applied to have their student loans forgiven under PSLF, but only 96 received forgiveness. That means that over 99% of borrowers who applied were rejected

Why do you feel so entitled to have your mortgage wiped out?

Perhaps not in your country. But in the US, student loans have been forgiven.

I don't, but why would taxpayers subsidize one type of debt forgiveness over another? It is completely unfair.

This isn't about subsidizing debt. It's about stimulating the economy.

I suggest you do some research on stimulus packages to learn more.
