The gun is clearly visible in vidcaps that are all over Twitter. But that doesn't mean the officer saw it.
I'm sure the officer knew the kid had a gun, or saw the pistol swinging back and forth in his hand as he was running away. But did he see it when the kid spun around like he did? Who knows. But training and muscle reflex takes over when a fleeing suspect known to be in possession of a gun suddenly spins around to face you.
The cops spotted the 2 males within 3 minutes of receiving the scattershot alert. Had they arrived just 15 seconds later, the 2 males might have moved on. They would have lived another day to shoot at others.
If I was a cop on the overnight shift tonight and received a scatter shot alert, I would approach the area a little bit slower with the intent of purposely avoiding a confrontation with thugs and potentially having to decide to defend myself or be shot/ die. And if I shoot, tens of millions will, analyze my body cam video, frame by frame, in slo- mo and conclude I was wrong. EF IT.
Damn thugs will likely be dead within 5 years from gang warfare or some perceived disrespect on FB.
The mom is going to get millions when her arse should’ve been thrown in jail for letting her kid “Bvby Diablo” run the streets at all hours with the Latin Kings.
Along with his DADDY. Where is he?

Asking questions like that shows how racist you are!
While no one deserves to be shot, I still think it is a very valid question. No one ever has an issue if anyone asks why white kids are out at that hour. It has nothing to do with race.
Officers are judged on reasonableness and what they perceived at the time that they used force. They aren’t judged by slowing something down to 1/4 speed in slow motion replay and nitpicking everything that they should've seen. People don’t seem to understand that.
I have 14 years in. It's too late to get out now. All I have to do is survive for another 6 years and I will be out for good.
Long gone is the day of proactive policing.
Du Ma, stay safe. I truly understand we’re you’re coming from since I retired last February. I knew things in 2021 were not going to get any better. I’ll admit that this is a sad statement, but “I” could no longer risk my life or my freedom for the people in my community since they saw “me” as all their problems.
And yes, being proactive is not worth the risk anymore... You would have to be crazy to be a proactive law enforcement officer in today’s political climate. I just hope that people understand this and take the proper steps to protect themselves.
What the hell is a 13 year old kid doing out at 2"30 am with a gun?
That is the question that needs to be asked, and answered.
Maybe he thought it was cool to hang out with a 21-year-old dude and shoot up some passing cars.
