They'll tell you that if you can't afford to pay your employees $<whatever arbitrary value they choose that day> per hour, then you don't know how to run a business.
And this argument ALWAYS comes from people who have never run a business. As far as I can tell, none have even been in a management position of any kind. I've asked.
When someone cannot pay their bills because the minimum wage is too low for the cost of living, this is the response that is usually given. The same applies to you.
Some people suck at running a business, that could be your case, to which I would say close shop or re-evaluate your business.
Anecdotal, but I used to have minimum wage student positions that were available to young people who just wanted extra money and to get some work experience during the summer. Because of minimum wage going up so high in New Jersey, those positions were cut and absorbed into other positions. When you are dealing with a fixed limited annual budget the money to pay for increased wages when everything else goes up like cost of health insurance and business insurance, something has to give and it is usually in the form of cutting jobs or reducing them to part time.
To anyone who doesn't understand this have probably not even read a basic profit and loss statement or lack the understanding of what a profit and loss statement is. I don't think they teach budgeting and accounting for Bachelor's of Art degrees.

This.
What applies to workers also applies to business owners. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, or get a new job.
