After over three years living in a Salt Lake City church to avoid being deported, Honduran immigrant Vicky Chavez stepped outside Thursday with tears in her eyes as church congregants and friends cheered, celebrating her newfound freedom.

Chavez and her two young daughters took sanctuary in First Unitarian Church in January 2018 after she said she fled an abusive boyfriend in Honduras and sought asylum in the United States but was denied.

Chavez entered the United States illegally in June 2014 and was ordered deported by a federal immigration judge in December 2016. After exhausting her appeals in January 2018, Chavez had a plane ticket home to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. She instead accepted an offer of sanctuary from the church.

Chavez said she received a notice from Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Monday that she had been granted a so-called stay of removal, which limits her risk of being deported for a year.

Why didn't she stop in Mexico after fleeing Honduras, since it was much closer than the U.S.?
I think we all know what this lady is after, she wants a welfare check, food stamps, and other free "gib me dats", that Mexico probably won't provide.

There are plenty of Americans with abusive spouses should they just jump another country's border illegally to escape them?
Yeah really, most abused spouses just move out a few blocks away or maybe a different town, not thousands of miles away and across several countries. We are being played for fools.

You got that right but these bleeding heart liberals and ethnocentrics just deal in emotion not common sense. They never care about the victim just the criminal.

Immigrants bring diversity to America. Our culture is enriched by their presence.

America needs more poor, uneducated, single mothers that are lousy choosers in romantic partners. Because we don't have enough of those type of people here already. Those folks add to the rich fabric of our society. With any luck, she will pop out another half dozen kids and we will be uber blessed by their addition to the growing number of people that shouldn't be here. We don't need no stinking visas.
