Spoke to my uncle in Toronto this morning, and the Canadian part of my family are going out of their minds with overblown lockdowns. Here in California, we've had to deal with the unscientific whims of a narcissistic, power hungry Governor. But padlocked basketball nets are a whole new level of stupidity.

Canadians have a long history of tolerating government crackdowns on their liberty.

It's nothing new there, or unexpected. They aren't a society based on the concept of Individual Liberty, but rather "The collective good" as interpreted by their rulers.

I was staying at the Sheraton at Malpensa airport (Milan) 1 month ago, and next to me at dinner, were a few Canadian pilots laughing at these restrictions. Saying something to the effect that immigrants are coming and going to their home countries, but native born Canadians cannot travel.

People overwhelmingly want a helicopter parent type government which they can thank for keeping them safe. The alternative is death threats and pitchforks for killing their grandma

Well, it is not a secret that Canada is having a very bad 'second wave':

https://www.worldometers.info/corona...ountry/canada/

However, this statement from yesterday gives some hope:

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-heal...l-26-2021.html

"In recent days, following the implementation of restrictions in heavily impacted areas of Canada, the national Rt has finally dipped below 1. This means that for the first time in many weeks, the epidemic has dropped out of a growth pattern, primarily driven by recent declines in epidemic growth in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. However, Rt is still at or above 1 in other areas of Canada and needs to be maintained consistently below 1 to bring the epidemic under lasting control. This gives us reassurance that strengthened measures can slow growth where more contagious variants are circulating – but sustaining measures and individual practices is the key to driving and keeping growth down"

This Canadian website has lots of useful charges dated as of yesterday:

https://health-infobase.canada.ca/sr...-Canada.ca.pdf

Ontario province is being particularly hard hit, especially by the variants, which seem to be afflicting the younger population more than previously:

https://www.cp24.com/news/ontario-fr...clipId%3D89830

"Ontario says it will add hundreds of critical care beds this week to help with an influx of COVID-19 cases that is pushing the health-care system to the brink.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the government is exploring its options to boost hospital capacity and staffing levels as variants of concern wreak havoc on the province.

She said in a news conference on Monday that hospitals have been instructed to ramp down all surgeries “except the ones that are absolutely life-and-death matters.”

In short, this is not some willy-nilly thing done to aggravate your uncle. It is a worldwide pandemic, and Canada is in its bullseye now (along with India, of course, which is off the charts).

Padlocking outdoor basketball nets won't do a thing to stop it. So much data now showing how closing parks and open outdoor spaces can actually make the spread worse by sending people inside. But science or data don't seem to be part of policy there, and certainly weren't when Gavin Newsom locked down California.

The other problem is how low vaccination rates are there. They have virtually no biotech industry to speak of and no vaccine manufacturing capacity as a result. Thankfully, my uncle got a single AstraZeneca dose, but they're in really rough shape up there.

This statement will irritate Canadians but is the truth in a nutshell. The US has had one of the largest pushbacks against rona restrictions in the world because our society greatly values individual liberty. Conservative red states value liberty the most so that is where there has been the least compliance to the rules. The result is that more people in the US (red state especially) were exposed to the virus and have natural immunity. That combined with vaccines has resulted in the US not having a major third wave, with the exception of a few heavily locked down blue states. Blue states and other countries that embraced lockdowns had populations which were shielded from the virus. When they opened the unexposed and unvaccinated faced inevitable exposure to the virus.

All this has been proof that the mask wearing lockdown mentality is a complete and utter failure. Even the unpopular Michigan governor must have realized it because she did not lock her state down again in the face of a lockdown caused third wave there.

Yep- and our cases are now falling significantly all without any additional restrictions. She also learned that implementing onerous, nonsensical restrictions creates resentment and non-compliance with more sensical measures. Still waiting for the data on how banning motorized boating or banning the sale of caulk at Home Depot but not a smaller hardware store "saves lives".

And it's so funny even looking at NHL games. Canada is tiny population-wise compared to the USA and had a fraction of the covid cases or deaths, yet they STILL don't allow a soul into the games which the USA has people in every arena! HAHA!

They threw a big hissy fit about international travel from the USA to Canada for games so we had to make a special arrangement that only Canadian teams play each other and only American teams play each other! This was even AFTER the vaccines hit the market! Good grief!

What a lame nanny country. Parts of the USA are like that too but thank god we have rational people pushing back against these nutty lockdown liberals in all these states. In Texas they have full baseball stadiums and they have less cases than even much smaller states like PA!

Shelter, extreme safetyism, and safe spaces are preferred I guess!

Imagine if we had the need for another D-Day today! We'd all be in BIG trouble!

Actually, it's nearly none of that.

COVID restrictions are about the resources - and Canada has fewer of them than the USA. It's just math. Canada (per capita) has fewer hospital beds, and is therefore less able to deal with larger concentrated outbreaks. As a result - they take their restrictions seriously.

And their numbers show it. Whether or not American values play into it - there is no question the restrictions work, unless you think somehow Canadians are naturally immune.
