There are several factors that go into calculating R0, sometimes referred to as the reproduction number, things like infectious period, contact rate and mode of transmission.

Like nap mentioned up above, you are confusing speed of transmission with the R0, and shorter incubation periods (like Influenza A and B) will actually help curb transmission of the virus, also whether someone can transmit the virus when they are pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic will also play a big factor.

This is old news now. The dramatically reduced Influenza numbers in the southern hemisphere preceded the northern.

It's impossible to make a comparison in infection rates between the two. For one thing they were testing everyone for covid frequently whether they had symptoms or not. When has that ever been done for the flu? If they tested everyone moving for the flu like they do for covid then maybe they can make legit comparison. They didn't even test for the flu around here like they usually do. It was only tests for covid.

But still don't buy it... if the flu just went down.. ok but it is non existent. Have we ever had a year in the history of the world without the flu?

Remember the pandemic of 1918? We took precautions and there were less people around and still.. pretty deadly.
You have a lot of questions that people have tried to answer. I can't tell if you truly do not understand this information or if you are trying to catch someone in a "gotcha" of some sort, but I think you might need to sit down with someone who can explain it to you if it's the former (and if you are really interested).

It is perfectly fine and normal to not be a "science person," but it's really not within the scope of a forum post to re-explain it if you don't understand the basic explanations. Whether or not you "buy it," different viruses have different modes and frequency of transmission. Your doctor can probably help you if you are interested (I find it fascinating) but not really getting the quick forum post explanations (which is totally understandable if you don't have any background in this!).

Well then, read the 2019 WHO study to see what they found out about the wearing of mask as a way to prevent infection:

Face masks - Ten RCTs were included in meta-analysis, and there was no evidence that face masks are effective in reducing transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.

In other words, if someone is actually suffering a clinical definition of infection with COVID, masks do nothing whatsoever to prevent you from being infected, they are useless. For starters, these cloth and paper face masks government is forcing us to wear are incapable of filtering out the tiny little virus.

Everything is a symptom of covid. It simplifies things.

My nose was stuffy earlier this week, I lost most of my sense of smell, and had a headache, so of course I immediately knew that the only thing in this world which could cause those symptoms was COVID. Yup, the common cold no longer exists, neither does hay fever or sinus infections.

By golly, it's a miracle!

It's because we were all wearing our masks. But covid is still around because we were not all wearing our masks.

Would you prefer a written transcript of the expert's words? Would that radically change your mind?
