How about we take the best of the past and swap it for the worst of today? Just for reference, I graduated HS in 1976 and am struggling to see what was better other than the fact kids could actually be kids without video games or cell phones.

You graduated 10 years before I was born. I never lived in the 1970s. I do know that the chaos from the 60s lingered into the 70s.
Agreed! The bicentennial year was exuberant! Everything was red, white and blue with the “Spirit of ‘76” labeled on everything. Mark Spitz was in his tight red, white and blue Speedo and winning the Olympics. Bruce Jenner was the decathlon winner, a true “he man”. It was the dawn of disco, which had incredible vitality, a great to be alive feeling. The cars were all big and luxurious, nothing was downsized and cheapened yet, gas was cheap. You could actually turn on the radio in your car and hear good music on multiple radio stations. It was a better time. Tuition was cheap, and houses were more affordable to more people. One could afford to live in a neighborhood now off limits because it is too expensive. Japanese cars were usually bought by people who couldn’t afford American cars. TV shows were better, not full of graphic violence, and political correctness was an option, not a requirement. MASH, Barney Miller, All in the Family, The Jefferson’s, Mary Tyler Moore were better than most shows today. People looked better too, not as overweight, they didn’t dress grungy, they spoke better, not with such poor grammar as today, where it’s cool to speak with double negatives. People weren’t covered in so many ugly tattoos.

I agree, but don’t you think the bolded is a big thing ?
Perhaps the WORST decade for American cars, at least.
Mandatory emissions controls, the first catalytic converters, ugly "safety" bumpers, etc. Horsepower declined dramatically. My 75 Corvette had 165 hp!
My first new car was a 74 Camaro Z-28, although it was my 6th car by then.
After delivery date, it was all downhill thereafter.
Now, the 60's, that was a great decade for cars.
