Manchin says he does not support D.C. statehood bill
Sen. Joe Manchin on Friday said that he did not support the D.C. statehood bill, a blow to advocates pushing to make it the 51st state after the legislation passed the House last week.
He could continue to say he will vote against it, and the bill will likely fail. If he reverts back to a true politician, he could also say that he is against it. But then at some last-minute backroom session get some nice incentives for his State to change his vote. That is of course if no other Senators come out and say they will vote against it.
I say: return those D.C. neighborhoods to the surrounding states (Maryland and Virginia) that donated the land, save for the core 'Federal District" containing Congress, the White House, etc.
Indeed, I read where in 1847 Virginia actually took some of their land back, since it wasn't being used.
Because it was never supposed to be. Way back when, the founding fathers wanted a place for the government. They decided that place should not belong to any one state as it would cause friction for the country. So in their wisdom they borrowed land from both Virginia and Maryland to create Washington D.C. this way no one state could claim that they held the capitol of the country within it.
What should happen, since the supposed reason for even considering it has to do with the citizens of DC supposedly having no representation, is that the land is returned to Maryland and Virginia except for the property directly underneath and around the various federal buildings themselves. This way, the people living in the surrounding areas get their representation and have a state to call home.
The downfall of that, is it doesn’t give the democrats extra electoral college votes or extra house seats like they would get by making the tiny 20 square miles or less that is DC a state. This is a power grab, pure and simple.

Depending on the census numbers the additional population from DC into Maryland and Virginia might increase their congressional districts and therefore their electoral college votes.

Maryland and Virginia don't want DC back in them. It would change the entire structure of the state and their politics. DC residents want representation however. Giving them statehood would be the easiest way to satisfy both DC and Virginia/Maryland.

People can move to the next one over. It's literally just a few miles.
This is a non-issue being made into an issue because Democrats want more power. That's it, and anyone claiming otherwise either doesn't understand how the balance of power works in our government or they're also only interested in gaining more power for their party.
