Non-Western cultures often have different gender systems. In some cultures, people whom one would consider trans (in the West) are automatically classified as a third, or even fourth or fifth gender. In other cultures, they are described with the same terms used for gay people.

Among Indigenous and Native American communities, Two-Spirit is a general term for people within native culture who blend the masculine and feminine, and can have defined spiritual and societal roles. Many Indigenous communities have terms unique to their tribe for gender-variant members. Two-Spirit culture was and remains threatened by extinction in the face of European and American colonization, and many Native American members of the ***** community identify as Two-Spirit today.

Here are some other names of transgender and third gender identities across the globe:

Hijra: South Asia
Yan daudu: Northern Nigeria
Muxe: Zapotec cultures of Oaxaca, Mexico
Fa'afine: Samoa
Fakaleiti: Tonga
Mahu: Hawaii
Burrnesha: Albania
Kathoey: Thailand (while this term can refer to feminine transgender identities, the term is sometimes used pejoratively)

Get it now?

I doubt that they do get it. They have a million ways to explain away the madness.

gen·der
/ˈjendər/
noun
1.
either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.
"a condition that affects people of both genders"

Just a word to explain - biologically probably more.

What's a transgender woman? Technically, that would be a biological woman who identifies as a man. Let's get our terminology right. So a pre-op transgender MAN is still a man. Only four (4) genders remember.

P.S. Tomboy has never been considered a gender. Just saying.
Wrong.

It’s just the opposite.

No, they also know there are only two genders, but like modern times, they have given a label to those who are confused about their gender/sex.

Yeah nah.

That’s actually not the case. Can you set aside your snark for a moment, it’s pretty interesting, and you don’t have to agree with them. But it is indeed a fact that other cultures recognise more than two genders.

Called the third gender, evidence for their existence in Hindu society can be found in Hindu holy texts like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, where Hindu hero Arjuna becomes the third gender. Third gender people have often been revered throughout South Asian history; for example, Muslim rulers of the Mughal Empire in the 15th to 19th centuries were generous patrons of third gender Indians. Many rose to significant positions of power under both Hindu and Muslim rulers. In 2014, it was estimated that around 3 million third gender people live in India alone.
