Last year they were essential workers. Funny how quickly that changes.

But the other side of it is.....yup. They went to work every day-just like everyone else for the most part. Is he giving money to fast food workers? How about doctors? Nurses?

Nope. Hes funding the folks with guns that he wants to support him.
Nurses, should of gotten bonus through Cares act - covid. You haven't a clue, you don't work in these areas.

Some Grocery Chains did give their Employees bonuses, pay increases for a certain amount of time. Sorry you were clueless about this as well.

You're just Anti-Police.. Anti Anything that's not YOU.

How can you be so jealous of a EMT getting a whopping 1k bonus. They save lives.. They are one of the lowest paid jobs. You are just being - pathetically, silly.

It is...LOL....

Not the point, you want protection but don't support those ****ty jobs that you'll be the first to run to and crying for, for protection.

For the sake of argument, I will dismiss the fact that EMS and Firefighters are also considered First Responders.

With your concerns about politicians bribing police officers, you have a favorable opinion of giving raises to police officers (first responders in general) but not a bonus?

I can't say this with certainty, but I believe that there are more municipal police officers than there are state police officers in Florida. Municipalities typically pay first responder salaries and have long favored bonuses over raises (aside from COLAs) because they are easier to budget and cost less over time. But the state does not have the authority to give an annual raise to a municipal first responder.

I don't see a nefarious plot to manipulate the police officers, but perhaps my former experience as a first responder sheds light on the circumstances that others are not aware of.

Playing to the base.

An odd way to do it though, since it’s basically a welfare payment from the gummint.

It's not a bailout, socialism, or welfare when a Republican does it.

Always remember that.

Exactly. All the expanded funds for war or terror ready police. No reason every police officer needs to be looking like a swat team member. Honestly the SWAT and bomb squad officers I met were nicer than traditional officers. Where the funds came in effected mental health resources which are mainly nonexistent in most places before hand.

The problem with the OP was posting a thread where the title says first responders in general and then later turned into police alone with their original post. The OP then reverted to "Oh it is for all first responders." It is a very wrong to frame that way.

Again, not that simple. The key bailout bill, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, was proposed by the Republican George Bush administration, but also had wide Democratic support. Not all bailout are bad.

This said,

The State of Florida is getting $10 billion from the federal government in COVID relief funding and Governor Ron DeSantis wants to use some of that money to give first responders $1,000 dollar bonuses as a “thank you” for their service during the pandemic.

This is bad, why? Plus first responders =/= police officers, ya know?

For the posters who mentioned doctors, lol not all doctors are created equally okay? My one uncle who is a plastic surgeon has been on vacation for almost a year, my other uncle who is an emergency room doctor has been working since day one of this pandemic. Neither one of them needs an extra thank you $1,000 come on.
