Same with grocery stores? I guess it's reasonable explanation for "food deserts."

I don't know, the article says they closed these stores over the last five years.

The article says they have organized gangs hitting the stores. They probably should completely leave the market if it's that bad. Not a good situation for a merchant.

They likely closed those location based on a whole bunch of other criteria, the rent for those locations given SF's real estate profile would be right up there if I had to guess.

Hell with peoples jobs those stores provided, we can't hurt the fee-fees of shoplifters. They were just trying to have a better life with cotton balls and cheap decorations!
