It will only be tough because the Western/ USA propaganda machine is great at spewing lies, omissions, and half truths. Heck it even has fooled American citizens most of the time.

For a long time China seemed to be playing a slow diplomatic game.
It appears that in several key areas they got a lot more aggressive like with Australia and India among others.

Throughout history, it would seem China's greatest enemy has been itself and I wish them no ill will but like with Putin, consolodating power is great as long as the leader is wise and good. The problem is that the NEXT leader may be a fool or tyrant and the histories of the far east, europe, africa back into Ancient Rome (nero anyone?) is littered with such problems.
