You cannot function in modern life without an ID. Everything from employment to seeing a doctor to establishing utilities in your home requires an ID.
You cannot receive any government benefits without an iD. Social Services will track down necessary documentation to get you an ID before you can even receive any money or benefits. The poorest of people by and large have ID for this reason.
There are no excuses left. None.
Then make it easy and free to get...the Gov't should send everyone an ID w/out making you have to go somewhere and pay for it...problem solved. Instead, rn, you're required to bring your birth certificate (the original) wait in line at the BMV, then pay $ (poll tax basically to vote) just to get an ID...Instead, the government should send every citizen an ID for free on that citizen's 18th birthday...no cost, no Birth certificate needed...then you can enforce an ID...until then, proof of residence should be the only thing needed to vote.
Why don't Democrats care that Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID laws?
I think most of us do. There is some political bantering back and forth, but most Dems are OK with Voter ID, as long as it's not restricting voting, and thus far, the policies put out are restrictive.
Most Americans also support more Gun Controls, but R's "Don't Care". Isn't that the same kind of argument you are putting out there?
A HUGE majority of Americans support legalization of Cannabis, Same thing.
But to your point, I don't think it's that Dems "don't care". We/They just have concerns with the way R's are going about it.
And sadly, neither party seems to support anything the other one wants. That is both sides, and it's sad. Probably the bigger problem.
This. The Democrats want to be able to go door to door to harvest votes. They know this is a strength of theirs. They won the last election with this strategy... They know republicans don't go around and organize in this manner. If a person wants to vote they should make the effort to go and drive to the polling place.
Not everyone owns a vehicle...or is able to drive or is able to take several hours off work to wait in line...it should be as simple as possible for Americans to vote. Oregon and Colorado don't even have election day polls anymore...it's all done via mail...they make it work just fine because they make it easy for every citizen to vote...the way it should be
If all the energy brouhaha and arguing consumed about voter ID had been used to get people an ID, this would have been over 10 years ago.
I paid poll tax so I know it was to keep some from voting.
But, if somebody can't figure out how to get ID, should they be telling us who should be in charge of our schools, towns, cities, counties, states and federal governments?
And if all the states putting impediments in the way of voting doesn't compel minorities to get out the vote, I will be stunned.
Souls to the polls can serve lunch after services, then go vote an hour later. And take a friend.

After a decade or more of the voter ID controversy, everyone who wants to get into compliance has already done so.
Anyone who is broke and wants to vote but doesn't have the required form of ID can get assistance if they make a phone call.
That is true, they get help for government assistance and if they could do that, they can get help for a ID.
