I think a lot of this stems from a very divisive and dishonest media that pushes people to fringe news sources making the problem worse. There was a Reuters Institute poll showing only 29% of Americans trusted the news (which seems too high for me). Now a poll from Gallup seems to confirm these poor numbers.
Gallup gave those polled 5 options, in cascading order they are Great Deal, Quite a lot, Some, Very Little, None*.
*"None" is a poor option as it is an absolute and the other end of the spectrum isn't an absolute.
Anyways...
America's faith in the following institutions for June 2021 by adding Great Deal and Quite a Lot together are as follows:
Newspapers 21%
TV News 16%
Big Tech 29%
Police 51%
Military 69%
Congress 12%
Presidency 38%
Medical system 48%
Public schools 32%
Small Businesses 70%
Big Businesses 18%
Churches 37%
Unions 28%
Banks 33%
US Supreme Court 36%
