Apart from the fact that we have similar situations with American labs - what exactly is the point? Whether the virus escaped from the Wuhan lab, or whether it originated from a pangolin in a wet market, while it would be nice to know, what difference would it make politically? Even if it's from the lab, it was still an accident, and even if it weren't, it's not as if we're going to ban all Chinese products to retaliate.

Unbelievable conclusion! The fact is the pandemic started. Once it started, the world needed to take the necessary steps to slow the spread of the virus. Because the necessary steps were not taken, 3.7M people in the world are dead. The USA had one of the worst responses in the world with the most deaths, and ranking 18th highest in the world for death per 1M population.
He had no humility. Not even a little bit, especially given how he championed gain of function research. The American public were the victims of all this, and we did the best we could. Fauci, on the other hand, could have done a lot better.
I read the long article. It explains why the US agencies wanted to steer focus away from the lab leak theory.

Of course Fauci knew about all the gain of function research that is going on, and he knew what the government has been funding. If people keep digging, they'll also find out about military involvement. The Pandora's Box has been opened.
Very easy for people to take a small pieces of information and develop a conspiracy, we have seen this many times before. Trump claimed "what if they developed a bio weapon" and Peter Navarro claimed they actually did develop a weapon, all without any facts back in April 2020, just throwing it out there.
The Bat Lady has been sharing research for years, why is that now an issue and why is GOF suddenly an anathema since it is also used in research labs to develop vaccines. Why shouldn't we collaborate with other countries.

A "similar situation with American labs" would exist if a US lab accidentally or deliberately released a virus that killed millions of people, left others with long-term medical conditions that could reduce their life expectancy and quality of life and destroyed commerce the world over.
If the release was deliberate, what makes you think this reengineered virus isn't one of many or that the treat of their release couldn't be used by the Communist Chinese as a virtual dooms-day machine?

You know, before the PRC came along, we did business with a number of other nations, none of which posed an existential military threat to the North American continent.

We should absolutely understand the origin to the extent we are able to determine it. The information will help us combat future recurrences, whether the virus was manmade or natually occurring, spread organically or released either accidentially or intentionally. We will learn from it regardless. And certainly if the virus did come from a lab it is important for accountability, even if there isn't any direct accountability it would strngthen our hand with resect to standards in the future. Regardless of what ends up to be the truth, it's important to know it. And even moreso if it did come from a lab in China - if that is the case and we don't call them on it or get other action it will embolden them in the future.

These virologists all know each other, especially the ones that work with coronaviruses. If they haven't collaborated and published together, they've met at conferences and had meals together. Scientists work with international colleagues and are familiar with each other's work. This includes the Bat Lady. And the WHO team members all know each other already.
