I couldn't find that information. The link I posted was from this morning, and the statement was that the family had met with school officials but he still wasn't allowed to get his diploma.

According to the New York Times, in a statement written Sunday, the family is holding out for an apology from the school.

That's because there weren't any. It's called hallucinating and there are medications that may help. But these folks don't want help.

A racist comment would be something about hating all Mexicans or wanting to harm/kill all Mexicans, or some such thing. You know like some of the BLM types say they hate all whites and want to empty revolvers into their heads. That's racism. I did not see any such comments. But apparently that poster saw something about opening death camps for Mexicans or shooting them or some such ridiculous thing. In reality, I'll bet he'd have a very, very hard time finding anyone who actually feels that way. So, he invents them.

My kids didn't get their diplomas at graduation - it's too hard to hand them to the right person since there will be no-shows at the ceremony and that would mess up the order of the diplomas to be handed out as they cross the stage.

The person handing out the paper initially balks, but then gives whatever it is to him. The school is still meeting with him/his family and they'll likely come to some agreement.

The family will run in front of the media screaming racism and putting the screws to the school, maybe claim the school officials called them racial slurs while their at it.

Serious question, have they set up the go-fund-me yet?

Give the kid 1 day of scraping gum off desks and call it a done deal.

Please point to the racist comments.

More ridiculous assumptions. There is nothing in your link that indicates his parents entered the country illegally. That's just wishful thinking to fuel another anti-immigration rant.
Overreacting? They gave the kids the opportunity to wear whatever statement they wanted to make on their mortar boards. Apparently some of the other kids put small flags on their mortar boards, and apparently one of those small flags was a Mexican flag.

When I was doing a search to see if this is a common thing for kids to ignore the rules at graduation, which it appears to be so...

I thought one school was overreacting when they withheld a diploma to a girl because she had worn open toed shoes to graduation when they were told to wear closed toed shoes. The mother had explained that they couldn't afford to buy her another pair of shoes at that time. I believe the school relented and gave her the diploma.

Another example of a school overreacting is when an American Indian wore an eagle feather on her mortar board, even though the kids had been told not to put anything on those caps. Her diploma was to be withheld until she paid a $1000 fine. (I can see a $5 or $10 fine, but a $1000 fine? yeow) The school dropped the fine and gave her the diploma.

Those things are overreactions by the schools. But, allowing kids to express themselves on their mortar boards and one kid who thinks he is special drapes himself in a massive flag instead of simply putting a small flag on his cap .. no, the school did not overreact to that.

I had previously put in an ABC link in this thread, that stated school had made the announcement that he could have picked it up on Friday.

'They are "holding out" until the school apologizes' ... and there ya go. In other words, it's available for him to pick it up but he won't do it until he gets what he wants out of the deal.

Of course, they want the school to apologize because they did "nothing" wrong.

The kid was only told that there was a specific dress code and the consequences for violating said code. The kid had the opportunity, as others did actually do, of decorating his mortarboard. He chose not to. But none of that matters because all the family had to do was scream racism and every one of their actions become acceptable.

If they pick it up too soon they may only get an apology. If they wait too long the public will start to lose interest. So they will drag this out as long as they can for the maximum effect. I will be genuinely shocked if in the end the only thing this family wants is an apology.

Yep. But it's more likely they are hoping to get tens of thousands from the gofundme listings.

Agree.
Pulling stunts like this is a time honored tradition at high school graduations. Taking away his diploma for this minor act of rebellion is overkill by a large margin. People seem to have lost perspective these days.
