Why would the FBI want to know who logged on to USA Today article on the two agents killed in Florida?

I read the FBI withdrew its request but wonder what is being investigated.

They wanted to see who would have been perched at that site, waiting to read the story when it broke, on the belief that the accomplices would have an interest in reading it, and would be waiting for it to be published on the website.

They only wanted the IP addresses of those who clicked into the story for the first half hour it was on the website.
