Here is what really happened as witnessed by the people with her that day. Very different story than propaganda media tells, which borders on fantasy. Polluted Pelosi's Gestapo (Capitol police and Antifa) at work.
Second Eye-Witness Steps Forward — CONFIRMS Capitol Hill Police Killed Trump Supporter Rosanne Boyland Then Attacked Those Who Tried to Save Her (VIDEO)
Philip knows this because he was next to her when she died. He was holding her hand. And Philip nearly died himself.
The man in the video has a foreign accent but you can understand most of what he says.
Given the presumed credibility of the source attributing the death to injuries sustained while defending the Capital, it was reasonable for media to assume Sicknick was the unknown officer bashed with a fire extinguisher.

I mean sure, why wouldn't they uncritically parrot a high-level DOJ source after high-level DOJ sources used them as megaphones to, say, propagate bogus Russiagate narratives for the previous 4+ years?

Death of QAnon Follower at Capitol Leaves a Wake of Pain

Ms Boyland, 34, was one of five people who never made it home from the 6 January protest, which erupted in violence when hundreds of people stormed into the Capitol. Her death has left her family grappling to understand how Ms Boyland, who they say had never voted before 2020, wound up waving a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag amid a crowd of fanatic supporters of the president before walking up the steps of the Capitol to her death. Their frustration deepened further last week when Republicans in the Senate blocked an effort to establish an independent commission to look into the origins and the handling of the attack on the Capitol.

Reporters should never assume so, no, it is not reasonable for them to do so.
Drug overdose. The NYT's had originally lied by trying to make it appear that she'd been trampled.
This is the same NYT that made up the story and said the cop died after being hit in the head with a fire extinguisher. We now know they lied and made up the whole thing. I see the NYT as a little less credible than the National Enquirer.
