Whose idea was it to make this a national memorial? Why are people designating sites of mass murders as such? This and other such crimes are terrible, sure, but national memorials???
We're talking about national memorials that include sites such as the National D-Day memorial as well as influential persons such as Benjamin Franklin.
Days before the fifth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting, U.S. Senators passed a bill designating the site of the former nightclub as a national memorial.
The legislation passed unanimously Wednesday afternoon after its sponsor, Sen. Rick Scott, asked that it and its companion bills be approved by unanimous consent in observance of the five years since the mass shooting. H.R. 49, the U.S. House’s version of the bill, and Senate Resolution 265, both honoring the victims of the shooting, also passed the Senate unanimously. H.R. 49 passed the U.S. House May 12.
Back about 15 years ago, the Station nightclub in Rhode Island burned to the ground, taking the lives of 100 people. The land was cleared and a lovely park was put in its place, offering a place of quiet contemplation and reflection. This is the model that should be used for the Pulse site.
