Correction: Until the nightmare of govt interventions are over. Covid didnt put people out of work, politicians and bureaucrats did.
The real answer is; Eliminate taxes, cut govt spending and remove all restrictions.

The nightmare for many is returning to work, as couch surfing with a $600/weekly bonus they found fit their "work ethic".

Landlords do not control housing prices, if a person lost their job due to Covid and cannot find equivalent work then the solution is not for them to leave the only home they have ever known.

That creates a country without roots which leads to social instability.

If you disagree, explain why.
You are generations too late. Americans move around all the time for different reasons, and have been for decades.

If there were no rentals what is the alternative especially for young people starting out? People move around for jobs all the time and don't want to commit to buying, and don't want to worry about all the maintenance, expenses and hassles of homeownership.

Very few adults live in the "only home they've ever known" anyway.

72% of Americans live in the same county they grew up in.

You can't expect them to leave to a different state or region so landlords can make more dough.

28% is well over 80 million. Many move in prime earning years all the time. They can either pay debt in full by 6/30 for housing, or await the inevitable and

The census bureau only accounted for those over 25 years old.

"We surveyed 2,000 Americans with an age of at least 25 years old asking them if they have moved in relation to their hometown.

That means it excluded 60 million Americans. So I think that 28% would be about 70 million, not 80 million.

Regardless, the point being that a majority Americans do not move around and if you force them to we will experience societal collapse.

If they failed to pay the rent or mortgage, they forced themselves to leave the house, and I am fine with that outcome, as their actions caused it.

Society will be stronger when the bums who took advantage of the pandemic to couch surf free can no longer do so, but now must pull their own weight.

But they are not all slackers.

What about the people who lost their jobs in Covid and cannot find an equivalent replacement.

Housing prices are being artificially inflated so someone who originally could afford their rent no longer can.

This is eight million people we are talking, people forced into impossible positions.
