Honest question. But what does this mean to the average American? Another day off? Another day of bank closure? Most Americans don't know why we have Memorial Day or Labor Day. Our VP told everyone to "have a nice long weekend" as she headed out the door on Memorial weekend.
So what exactly will this do?
I don't know, but Columbus Day is a federal holiday. What does Columbus Day mean to the average American?
I knew this was going to happen long before they even voted on the bill.
It's not good enough that the bill passed quickly and with an overwhelming majority. Nope, the few that voted "no" MUST be ostracized, demonized, threatened with all kinds of bad things. I absolutely guarantee a LOT more Republicans wanted to vote no, but simply voted yes for fear of being labeled a 'racist.'
And make no mistake, you WILL hear about incidents in the future where private businesses will face social media hate because they wouldn't observe Juneteenth or give their Black employees time off for it.
Just goes to show why these types of things are sooo utterly divisive in America.
Imagine being a white American, and being so proud to celebrate the 4th of July holiday, because it's one of the greatest days in your ancestor's history, marking the independence of America.
Then imagine being a white American who is proud to celebrate historic moments of your ancestors, and yet having a problem with Black Americans getting a holiday that LITERALLY CELEBRATES THE END OF THEIR ANCESTOR'S ENSLAVEMENT.

Imagine all you wish. The reality is that the 4th of July Holiday has absolutely nothing to do with race.
At any given time, 30% of the population are immigrants. Why shouldn’t we be having a Holiday for them? National Immigration Day. Many of them left Socialism Dictatorships , Despots, etc. They could be celebrating their own emancipation.
I would vote against juneteenth because the made up word is so lame. If people want to be serious about what it commemorates, they need to get rid of that joke name.

Either it'll be a bank type holiday like Martin Luther King day or private workplaces will remove a holiday to replace it with this one if they feel pressured to recognize it. For most in the private sector there will be no extra day off. There is a set number of holidays that can be shifted around as needed but not added to. If you have floating holidays this may replace one of those, so it'll give workers less flexibility but no extra time off.

SInce neither of us is Black, why do you think they choose Juneteenth instead of either the Emancipation Proclamation or the official end of the Civil War? Maybe ratification of 13th Amendment?
Wouldn't it be more accurate and inclusive to celebrate those unification dates?
A holiday is a holiday. I choose which ones are important to me. This one will not be but I will reap the benefits of it by another free paid off day from work.
