the median asking rent for a one bedroom in New York City in June was about $2500, according to a Zumper analysis.
Why quote median one-bedroom in the City? How much is a low-end studio apt within an hour commute to her job? That's all she needs to move out of her car.

Someone making $40,000 doesn’t have to live in her car. She just needs to move to a cheaper location, within an hour’s commute, and get one or two roommates. Maybe even rent a room in somebody else’s house. People do that all the time.

If she can't afford to live in NYC, why stay? Amazon pays warehouse workers pretty much the same everywhere I thought. It's not Amazon's fault that NYC is a hot mess and unaffordable by most people's standards. Some people are more than willing to shell out most of their income for the thrill of living in a lively city, but eventually, most people will get sick of it if there is no way for them to get ahead financially.

Sure, I get it that $19 an hour is not even close to a livable wage in parts of New York, but that's not Amazon's fault. I'm not an elitist but the only ones that can help people like her, are the individuals themselves. Either move to a lower cost city/state, or get a higher paying job like something in tech that pays double or triple that amount.

Hell, she can barely afford a street vendor hotdog on $19 an hour.

But it won't because there's plenty of people willing to work for 19.30 an hour. If she doesn't feel the compensation is adequate, nobody is forcing her to keep the job. I get the frustration but she obviously feels she is fairly compensated for her time. When I was just out of college making 25/hr in a less expensive city than NY I had roommates. It would have been nice to have my own house and BMW instead of an old Honda and sharing a rundown duplex with two other guys... But I couldn't afford that on 25/hr.

She's making over $3000 a month and not paying rent. Where does the money go?

So let's raise the minimum wage to $40 an hour so everyone pays inflationary prices on everything for the sake of equity.

Tax revenue will be through the roof!!!!

Why does it have to be a studio, why does it have to be within an hour, and why does it have to be in the City? Rent a place in Newark and commute. Rent a place on Long Island and commute. Live where you can afford.

Or is it some kind of right to be able to afford a place of your own within one hour of work?

I just checked. A studio apartment in Rahway, NJ is being advertised for $1250 a month. It’s 45 minutes into NY. Quite doable.
