I went to Bed Bath and Beyond the other day and the girl says that they aren't allowed to stop shoplifters. She said people walk out with entire comforter sets. They don't even follow them to their car. The police usually show up long after they're gone. If I'd have to guess, the cost is past onto the consumer of the store loses money until they eventually shut down. That's probably why some stores stay out of neighborhoods that are high in crime.
Folks, a few years ago I visited a country where shoplifting is a way of life. Not much the stores can do. The losses are covered by the prices, i.e. you and I pay for the losses. Businesses do not close. They just raise their prices. There is nothing else they can do. And yes, the tellers are in on it.
Mind you, in that country, carjacking is a profession. I kid you not.
