I live in LA, and can see how zoning in such a way that it makes the 2nd largest city into essentially a giant suburb. It really isn't. Basically, the city outgrew it's Suburban American dream phase.
People through the years voted for height restrictions, etc. Now they wonder why traffic is so bad. Because you build low, and wide, everything is spread out, and you remove rail, that just exasperates the problem.
I can dive deep into this subject. Even though I'm not perusing a career in urban planning.
I would think that taller buildings mean more stuff in a given area, which equals more traffic in that area. Spreading things out should actually reduce traffic congestion, shouldn't it?
Berkeley California recently passed a resolution to abolish single family zoning on racial justice grounds.

Purchase an old home of historical significance while you still can.
An heirloom to hand down to your children before it become impossible.
I enjoy many of Eco Gecko's videos.
Is spot on in explaining this topic.
What is not seen is the bigger picture.
Putting it simply.
Grow your family in a city living like sardines on top of one another sacrificing anything that equates to peace and quiet.
Retire with a pension and Social Security to these quiet places where your accumulated monies will keep you and the neighborhood
alive and well. Die, get buried and pass the leftovers onto your kids.

Yes, a sort of moral blackmailing on the part of woke YIMBYs to expose the hypocrisy of and to get Berkeley's woke affluent boomers to practice what they preach. I agree that allowing one to split their property up is good for passing down intergenerational wealth.
I wonder if conservatives would be more against single-family zoning if the issue were framed as a restraint on property rights, i.e., the original conservative position in America.
How is it "freedom" if I can only build a certain type of building, housing a certain number of people, built a certain way, on MY land? If I can knock down a dilapidated Cape Cod, and put up a duplex, and make profit, why should the government restrain my freedom to make profit?

Because you’ll fill it with criminals and property values will plummet. The local school children will have their resources stolen by illegal kids.

It always goes there. "Illegals and criminals".
Proof the conservative movement has nothing to do with free markets.
