Of course there is. If we did that it would mean we would have executed quite a few innocent people, an obviously cruel punishment for a crime they didn’t commit.

Most execution's take 20 plus years lot of times the families are dead by time of the execution day. The reason is they want to make sure someone is actually guilty. If the Justice system needs 20 years to make sure they have the correct person why do we have the death penalty. The family members don't see justice for years if they are still alive.

One thing I do think they should do is not allow letters, books, marriages, tv shows all about making the killer famous for their crimes. Everyone knows who Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy is yet no one remembers the names of their victims. When someone is convicted their story should become the copyright owned by the state not sold to any of these TV shows.

In every barrel of bad apples, they may be one or two that could have been eaten.

So killing a few innocent people is ok with you as long as it allows us to dispose of most bad people quickly, got it.

Having the death penalty available as an option that people can plea down from is a powerful tool.

I'd be thrilled if everyone had the DP available but with a mandatory attached plea deal for life if full confession etc.

Any questions, I direct you to read up on the Green River Killer.

If someone is plea dealing down from death their defense is nothing more then an attempt to avoid the death penalty, or make a media show out serial killer's. Green River killer they had more then enough to convict him with DNA directly linking him to 4 bodies. His plea deal was only to close up other murders that he committed they didn't know about. Having a Death Penalty to extract that information from very small number of serial killers doesn't make any sense.

On the flip side, at least the Capitol Policeman who shot unarmed Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt to death without warning, is safe.

Garland orders halt to any further federal executions, official says

ByAlexander Mallin
July 1, 2021, 4:11 PM

Attorney General Merrick Garland has ordered a temporary halt to the Justice Department advocating any scheduling of further executions of federal inmates, a DOJ official told ABC News.

The new directive comes after Garland's predecessor in the job, Attorney General William Barr, had resumed the department's use of capital punishment against inmates after a nearly two-decade lapse and pushed for executions of several federal prisoners during the transition period before President Joe Biden -- who opposes the death penalty -- took office.

The directive, however, is not expected to impact the department's position taken recently in the case of Boston bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev, a person familiar with the matter told ABC News. Officials last month urged the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court's ruling and reinstate Tsarnaev's death penalty despite Biden's stated opposition to capital punishment.

Ill google it for you. The Crimes Act of 1790 defined some capital offenses: treason, murder, robbery, piracy, mutiny, hostility against the United States, counterfeiting, and aiding the escape of a capital prisoner.[4] The first federal execution was that of Thomas Bird on June 25, 1790, due to his committing "murder on the high seas"
