I would say the rules should be adjust since thc is not a performance aid. If alcohol is allowed why not weed? The point is though that weed isn't allowed, she knew this and for whatever reason still decided to smoke it (her mother died). Rules are rules. If she was truly passionate about being in the olympics she should have follows the rules.
I also wonder if people would be as angry if this were a white man or woman. Seems like she's getting an awful lot of sympathy.

It really is that simple. Being in the olympics was just not all that important to her if she indulged when she knew it was against the rules.
People make choices and must live with the consequences.
The problem with marijuana is not that it's considered a performance enhancer, but that it can act as a concealer for OTHER performance enhancers -- that is, it can facilitate cheating by generating false negatives for performance-enhancing substances. If drug testing technology has advanced enough to defeat the false negatives, maybe it should be removed. If not, it still makes sense to keep it on the list.
Rules are rules. They want to maintain a certain image and drug users isn't it. Other athletes have received similar bans for their out of competition drug use as well so it's hardly a unique or new situation. Sure, why marijuana but then why not cocaine or ecstacy or LSD. She knew the rules, chose to use the drugs.
