I read the list of the top worst cities, and the top 4 are tiny.
It seems if you get a little crime spree, with a small population, it kind of skews the crime rate.
Top two are Anniston and Bessemer Alabama, and then Florida City Florida.
look at the full information not just the map. That black dot pertains to Anniston and Bessemer (yes the map is kind of misleading with those black dots on AL so big)
1 Anniston Alabama
2 Bessemer Alabama
3 Florida City Florida
(results can be changed to 100 at link also)
Alarms.org:
Is this the most dangerous city in America?
Let’s look at the two communities that top the list: Anniston, AL (#1) and Bessemer, AL (#2) (see table 1 below). Both are small cities in Alabama that boasted bustling economies in decades past but have since fallen on hard times following the phenomenon of deindustrialization in the late 20th century.
Bessemer was once a hub of manufacturing and ore mining activity and home to a large Pullman Standard railroad car manufacturing factory, but as these industries dried up and/or moved elsewhere, unemployment rose, and with it, violent crime.
Now, Anniston and Bessemer are plagued by unemployment rates significantly higher than the national average, while the service industry jobs that have replaced manufacturing jobs in these communities often don’t come close to providing a decent living wage. The same phenomenon is seen all across the top 100: economic disenfranchisement leading to higher instances of violent crime.
(more at link on their methodology)

Analysis should be limited to areas of specific size, shape and dimension. I propose 100k people max, 2x2 mile area. They can refer to sectors of major cities, but not paint the whole city with a broad brush. Unless it is a smaller city that is truly 100% high crime, like Belle Glade, East St. Louis, Bessemer, etc.
Over three years, we talked to more than 15,000 Americans to see how safe they feel living in the US. Find out which states worry the most about safety, which ones worry least, and where people have experienced the most run-ins with violent and property crime.

^^ there are some other maps, see link
There is a nice blue colored map near the end of the article "Find the safest cities in each state" where you can click on a state and it
it goes to another page and lists cites (not all have 2021 data but many do)
As we can see worry about crime does not correspond directly to the crime rate
So if crime has been high in a place for long time and you compare it to another place with much lower crime but that place has an increase in crime you can find more worry, thus news articles on it

This article gets it right. https://www.audacy.com/kmox/news/loc...-isnt-st-louis
It ranks crime by metropolitan areas rather than just the core cities themselves— a far clearer and fairer picture of crime in our urban areas. Interestingly, Anchorage MSA is number one. Also interesting: some geographically small cities, like St Louis and Washington DC, which get a bad rap for crime, don’t even rank in the top 10 when MSA’s are compared.
Guess a few cities you think might top the list of violent crime today
Then see where they rank on these lists
Chicago? New York? Saint Louis?
Check them out, see where they rank
Different sources will vary the ranking but usually not vastly different
Looking at the population density of a city is another factor.
Obviously a higher density city might have a higher crime rate although not necessarily a direct correlation.
The population map is above but here is a more detailed written list of population density in America, some surprises
List of United States cities by population density
The maps are just for introductory reference more detail below,
various sources for the violent crime rate estimates for various cities.
interestingly, New York with all the media hype on a crime surge,
don't get me wrong there has been a crime surge and it's a problem but on a relative basis
New York is not even making it to these top 100 most violent cities lists and
you will see on the first list they have Chicago at #73
while Danville, IL is at #6.
This is because when you look at a whole city only some parts of it may be particularly violent
These sites will mention their sources, some of it is FBI stats but there is a time lag on some of that
so they also use local data
Note at the end here below, some shocking places listed, looking at the flip side of this
