Well, it's basically true the Statue of Liberty primarily welcomed European immigrants.

I too would have to read the article.

It's good for the Trumpies to rile up their base. They don't want them relaxed.

Anyone who knows their history should realize that. A gift from France during the time of mass immigration from European countries.

Not everything has to be about Black people.

I am not trying to wedge religion into this at all. I could have used a number of examples to counter Saltine's point, which seemed quite arbitrary to me.

All things change. To say that the poem is not an integral part of the Statue of Liberty is silly. The poem was written as part of the fundraising plan to provide the pedestal for the statue. It was installed less than 20 years after the statue was placed, and was in place throughout the Ellis Island years of immigration.

Saltine's arbitrary point that the poem is not integral could also be used for any of the amendments to the constitution, because they were added after the document was originally signed. It would also apply to 37 of the 50 states, Washington DC, 370 of the 435 seats in congress, the national anthem, and so forth.

My point is that Republicans are firing up an outrage machine, but they are being hypocritical, as they have been just as interested in changing things over the years. In this case, they were the first people to suggest changes to the Statue of Liberty.

A statue of MLK is meaningless to me because I'm White. But it's meaningful to others.

America is not "me, me and only me". What happened to the big "salad bowl" approach where we have our cultures living together with tolerance for each other ???

Did we remove all the pieces and leave just one ? Does everything remind Black people of slavery where it has to be removed or berated in media articles ???

This isn't Africa. This is America and we have to SHARE it.

Yes, that includes me but statues are Trumpie material. Especially when you see someone's opinion expressed as some imminent danger.
