The Statue of Liberty has been known for more than a century as one of the most preeminent symbols of American freedom – but now a Washington Post writer appears to be making the statue another target of cancel culture.
Philip Kennicott, an art and architecture critic who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2013, argues in an essay published Saturday that Lady Liberty stands for "hypocrisy and unfilled promises."
Kennicott’s piece, titled, "Maybe it’s time to admit that the Statue of Liberty has never quite measured up," was accompanied by an illustration of the famous statue resting on someone’s fingertip – as if the statue were only a fraction of an inch tall instead of 151 feet (305 feet including the base).
What ever he says, people (black, brown, yellow, white) are still knocking on (DOWN) our doors to get in!!
They want to cancel EVERYTHING, but we can't allow that to happen!!!
What is wrong with these people? Nothing 'measures up.' That's why they are called IDEALS. They are things we aspire to. This really seems to be about removing our cultural symbols, and these are just excuses.
I would like to read the actual editorial before commenting. Unfortunately it is behind a paywall. If anyone finds a copy of the actual piece that is not behind a paywall and could post it here, it would be appreciated.
My wife and I went to the statue and Ellis island several years ago with her friends that were visiting from France. We toured the museum and we both thought it was amazing because she is an immigrant from Ireland and if not separated by a century she would have been standing in line waiting her turn to get into the country. Her friends from France thought it was pretty neat.
Lady Liberty is not a meaningless symbol of hypocrisy because America is what you make of it back in the days of Ellis island and still today.
I am so tired of people trying to tear America down. These fools should go to live in another country and see how much they miss the Freedoms that so many take for granted.
Nice to see the right wing on this forum giving us a great example of hypocrisy in action.
