What other words are commonly misused on City Data?
"Liberal": Someone who supports liberty.
That might have been true a century ago. But today's liberals have done a complete 180, supporting bigger and bigger government, laws to restrict more and more of people's private lives, higher taxes to pay for it all, etc.
"Conservative": Someone who wants government to remain the same.
This term was used as a pejorative a century ago, when government was relatively small and people were more free. Some people (now known as "liberals") who wanted bigger govt, used it to deride other people who wanted govt to stay small, trying to pretend they were afraid of change instead of simply wanting small government. But since government has exploded in the last 90 years or so, "conservatives" are now the people who want to radically change it, back to the small size it was a century or so, with only necessary expansions for high-tech defense, control of pollution across states etc. (The latter might require a constitutional amendment, since there is no authority in the Constitution for the Fed govt to handle pollution across state lines, unless you want to lump pollution in with "commerce - one of the sillier attempts at expanding Federal power.)
