I refuse to blame the media and government. People already have the predisposition to be hateful and divided. If the media and government can make you see everyone who thinks or looks differently than you to be an enemy, then that’s an internal weakness in character.
I think you're wrong.
A major reason we are divided is that people feed themselves on two different sets of "truths" or perspectives - and these truths are pitted against each other.
I guess when you use an example that suggests smacking me in the face, that's an internal weakness in your character - according to what you are telling me.
I'm around these people that Matt Damon is talking about... all day everyday.
Nicest most friendly people in the world for the most part.
However, it's not worth arguing with them about politics. They believe what they believe and all you are doing is upsetting them by pointing out all the ridiculousness about conservative people and positions.
But they will tell you how evil Obama/Hillary/Biden are and talk about Marxist this and Marxist that in a matter of fact manner. Like they are talking about the weather.
In reality though, they honestly don't see any value in "Democrat" policy as far as their own lives are concerned and I think that is part of what Damon is pointing out. Yes, they work in the oil patch and they see the Democrats trying to shut it down. So they are against it. They all have guns and they see that Democrats are for gun control so they are against it. They see all the neer do wells in their home town are all on government assistance while they work at their $12 an hour jobs...and they resent it.
They see all that stuff and think the Dems are "evil". And by that token it makes Trump and the conservative saber rattlers the "good guys".... doesn't matter what they say or do.
It's a simple way to think and live. And these people prefer it that way.

Especially note how they think simply and pigeon hole Dems as bad while they're good.
What I find interesting is how when you tell a liberal what policies are happening, they often agree that they are crazy, but they don't know it's Democrats putting those crazy policies in place.
The majority of us have an internal pull towards what is right and good.
But when we see and hear what the media puts in front of us, something happens... and I am attributing this to both sides - not just Dems.
Wow - I just had a really good though on fear porn and how we take in media - and how it has to do with how we respond to others. I need to develop this.
Lesson... the majority of the country (70%-75%) - from a behavioral and functional standpoint - are not that different.
We allow ourselves to be divided by government and the media... mostly from fear. In the end, we cancel ourselves out and the government does whatever it wants.
Someone started a thread a little while ago about sharing something about ourselves that others wouldn't know. It was actually pretty interesting hearing the accounts of the various people and actually made them human, instead of people with opposing viewpoints that we just talk at.
I am reminding myself of this as well.

We have extremes politically where in consumes their life,but most people really are just trying to get through the day,provide for their families etc and aren't that different.But they allow themsleves to be brainwashed by these scumbags.

Agreed. Many of the left claim the mantle of being the good people, the open minded and tolerant ones, who are informed and enlightened. When in reality they live in a bubble, look down their noses at those outside the bubble. In reality, many of them are the worst bigots, the most intolerant and judgemental people.
Matt reminds me of Biden talking about Obama:“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” Matt leaves his bubble and finds out that Trump supporters are good, kind people, and he is amazed by it.
