"A preprinted study from the United Kingdom reveals that five times more children committed suicide than died from COVID-19.
Researchers from the University of Bristol, University of York, University of Liverpool, and University College London compared morbidity statistics from the UK’s National Child Morbidity Database with Public Health England testing data between March 2020 and February 2021 in a recent report, which is in the peer-review process. Twenty-five “children and young people” — defined as people under eighteen years of age — died of COVID-19 during the period; the morbidity rate for COVID-19 was therefore two per every million.
Meanwhile, 124 children died of suicide during the same period — five times the number of children who had died of COVID-19."
So all you mothers out there who are concerned about your children and want to lock them up to protect them from Covid, might want to think twice about the effects of lockdown on young children. Adults, unfortunately, have ways of killing time so that one day just drones on into another day, and then into another day and before you know it, several years have passed.
For kids, a day seems like a month, and a week seems like eternity. Don't destroy their youth or their life by locking them down for months to protect them. It may be well intentioned, but you may end up killing them with love.
Right, children commiting suicide and mental health is a big issue. I am all for extending the safety net to assure we have the social workers, and support at their schools plus awareness of mental health.
Those are two separate statistics. Nowhere does it suggest children committed suicide because of anything to do with Covid.
That is what I keep thinking about. For example, how many of these kids were stuck at home with parents who do not know how to parent? Where normally they would have spent most days at various activities without their parents around.
That's troubling...and it presents a very, very hard decision. Do you not lockdown and have more people die from Covid, or do you lockdown, and risk things like suicide? Possibly lockdowns, along with more focus on mental health counseling is a path forward if there is another surge of the virus. There's not a great solution here.

Added. There are toxic parents, unfortunately.
I’m sure it was difficult for some families to hunker down together. Abusive and neglectful parents are a real issue. That was one reason why schools never should have been remote.
It was also hard for kids and teens to deal with the isolation, remote schooling, lack of things to do, etc.

Kids are so low risk from covid. Initially restrictions imposed on kids were to protect the adults but it seems like the goal posts have changed. Now that the adults have had their vaccines, kids are still expected to mask all day at school, periodically do schooling remote, have less options for activities, etc. It impacts their social and emotional health, their education, their future opportunities. It’s not a good idea for us to keep doing this to kids.

I haven't worried so much about the teens. At least the ones I know can happily spend the whole day on their phones, tablets or computers without saying a word to any nearby real person.
It's awful when this happens, whether it's through suicide or a disease.
