We have RWNJs to thank for that.

They don't want to believe that global warming exists, they don't want to accept that their con artist serial philandering champion lost an election, they don't want to take proper precautions to prevent the spread of a deadly disease.

They DO want to believe in pizza parlor pedophile rings in non-existent basements, they DO want to attack the capital and hang politicians they don't like. Their universe is completely backward, full of fantastic nonsense.

This is what 'conservatism' in America has come to ... what a bunch of troglodytes.
It's acute political decay in the GOP. I don't think they will be able to continue under the same party name in the near future. Both Gov's Devirus and Abbott are being held hostage by their own populist strategies to the point of absurdity. They are becoming the face of the Delta variant. All politics is risk. It looks like they threw craps on this one.

Remember last cycle? Florida got slammed ( and bashed by lock down advocates) first, then up north. I along with the CDC and Dr. Faucci expects the same pattern this year and into the future. Now add variants to the equation.

So what are we to do? Social distancing is more effective than masks.
Almost no one I know up north tested positive - so what's the big secret? They met up outside only with people who didn't live in their homes.

This is basically my plan again until Delta goes away.. masks inside, hang with friends and family outside. Not rocket science.

What are you suggesting Florida has to change to lower the hospitalization rate?

offer more vaccines?
Having more vaccines is not going to make more people take them. There is no shortage of vaccines.

less tourism?
No we dont need to shut down Disney, Universal, the beaches, the Everglades, Key West, Busch Gardens, South Beach, etc. But having more transparency from tourists would be a good start. It doesn't need to be required they vaccinate to visit, but they need to follow FL's mask guidance: if only there was some.

People want to keep excusing this, but the tourists are part of the problem. Just like they were last year, when they were crowding the beaches while Floridians were at home, yet we were the ones getting blamed.

lock down the state?
I dont think anyone, on the right, left, or middle, is seriously demanding a part 2 of lockdowns. We can stop asking this.

less immigrants?
sigh

stop international travel?
International travel is still pretty much a non factor right now, outside of going to the Caribbean. [As of now] TPA airport doesn't resume flights to Germany and UK until September, Canada in November, Switzerland in October. I would presume MIA, MCO, and FLL are in the same boat.

Americans can finally visit Canada again, but you have to be vaccinated with your card, or take a covid test before you get to Canada and bring your negative result, take another test when you get in Canada, and quarantine regardless. So international travel is still a headache. And we're moreso the problem than other countries coming here. Look at Canadas requirements vs ours.

or mask up children?
If it's what the parents and teachers want, then yes. People act like masks is the equivalent to torture. It's a piece of cloth.

Floridians can also do their own part. Get vaccinated, or wear a mask around others and get tested. It's painfully simple.

For starters, DeSantis could get more pro- vaccine messages out there. He could be teaming up with real infectious disease experts to fight misinformation. He could be providing access to cheap testing kits.

FL airports are only a small piece of the international travel puzzle. People can still come in via CLT, MIA, IAD, NYC or any one of 30+ international ports of entry throughout the US. Plenty of international flights from those places.

Well yes true, but when virtually everywhere is doing better than Florida in case rate, they shouldn't be the ones we're worried about. The main problem is internal, not people coming in from overseas and/or the border.

And international travel is still down considerably. That said, JFK, IAD, LAX, ATL, SEA, DEN, EWR, DFW, SFO, BOS, and CLT with their international arrivals, still aren't seeing the same problems as FL.

This.

He could remove the anti-mask, and anti-Fauci merchandise from his website too, wouldn't look good to his base supporters though, so he wont.

Houston, Dallas and Austin School Districts disagree and have mandated masks in schools.

Same thing happening in some school districts in Florida.

Last week, my state mandated masks in schools. There seems to be some very small localized attempts by parents to resist and send kids to school, sans masks and instructing children to decline when the school gives them a mask.

From anecdotal personal observation, those opposed to vaccines are more likely to be opposed to masks and when all else fails back to remote learning.

All it will take is for on kid in school to be hospitalized with Covid complications.

Going to be another fun school year.

Rightfully so, government forcing you to cover your face is an extreme measure that should only be in place for the most extreme of circumstances

A 98% survival pandemic (99.8% for no underlying conditions) with 4 vaccines available and therapeutics does not rise to that circumstance.

Hysterical Democrats are making this out to say DeSantis is banning masks. He is doing no such thing, he is simply asserting rights of people to not be forced to wear them.

Everyone in Florida is free to wear a mask in public

Those Texas school districts do not have the legal authority to mandate masks in their schools. Expect that to be struck down by a court ruling, soon.
