Last year during the alpha virus 1500 people a day were dying, now it's way less... way less. The death rate is included with the data.

But there was no way this surge was predicted -- an upward tick maybe but not this sruge....and if it was and DeSantis didn't plan for it -- shame on him.

Amazing how many people who claimed Trump wanted to be a dictator are now upset because DeSantis is trying to stop Biden and his cabal from being dictatorial.

DeSantis is not saying, legislating, or even implying that people cannot or should not be wearing masks or getting the vaccine. He’s simply making the point (correctly) that the government - any government - is not granted the authority to force people to do so.

Want the vaccine? Get it. Want to wear a mask? Wear one. Nobody is stopping you from doing either. What you can’t do is use the government hammer to force others to do those things.

A common misconception among right wing people is that you can't really have laws. Many of think there has to be a "choice" when it comes to any activity. Wrong. We have laws against speeding. Laws against murder. Governmental powers include the power to protect the health, welfare, and safety of citizens. A mask mandate or compulsory vaccinations for some groups may be necessary measures to protect public health. When a disease is extraordinarily contagious masks and vaccinations may be necessary (not optional) measures.

What bothers me the most about DeSantis though is that his actions are designed to deliberately pander to a a particularly irresponsible segment of the public. I have conservative republican friends who both vaccinate and don't vaccinate. What they don't do is go around telling everyone that its ok not to vaccinate. They keep the opinion to themselves rather than spreading dangerous misinformation. DeSantis is giving cover and support to people who are behaving in a way that is detrimental not only to themselves, but to others.

The surge was predicted BEFORE the variant reared it's ugly head.

I'm gonna predict a surge up north too in the fall. Oh wait... Dr. Faucci has already done that.

Here's the link again... it worked for me.

When did DeSantis tell people not to wear a mask or get the vaccine?

What you fail to understand is laws and mandates are not the same.

If you want a 'mandate' to become law the legislature must act and pass a law and then the executive must sign it.
Mandates are permitted by emergency authorization provided by the legislature.

Governor DeSantis is a ADVOCATE for vaccinations. He supports the vaccine. That is a false narrative your promoting. You are wrong.

The issue is forcing kids to wear mask in schools. The Governor has rightfully said, that is a parental decision.

You're the one who has misconceptions.

No, it is not a parental choice if they want their kid welcomed in to attend the local school. It's the choice of the administrators running that school or school district, not the gov, not parents, head of school/head of board. By cutting funding to schools who require masks you are nurturing the power of the school admin to manage itself.

If you are an anti mask family and your district requires masks, then yes, by all means, find some other wacko school where your kids can go get infected... but to have a blanket statement from the gov. that he's going to pull funding to schools that require masks, is wrong.

That is the issue here.

That action has already happened... executive order issued protecting the rights of parents to decide if their children should wear a mask and stopping school boards from requiring masks in public schools. Parents can make their own mandate for their own children... it's already done.

You are ABSOLUTELY wrong.

Not only has the executive order been signed to stop schools from imposing a mask mandate, but on Friday Governor DeSantis signed and executive order to withhold funds from schools who try and impose mask requirements for students.
