Seems that the true original, and growing in popularity both in the US and UK, is the term aluminum (uh-LOOM-in-um) as opposed to the forced-into-compliance aluminium (al-YOU-mini-um).

This forum is for politics and other controversies, I thought this was a nice reprieve from politics, since it still a controversy

Now how about Jag-yew-warrr(jaguar), the Brit's fancy, spiffy spin that they insist is proper!

You have revealed nothing new. It has long been settled that Aluminium is the official name of the metal.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) officially adopted aluminum in 1925, but in 1990 The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) accepted aluminium as the international standard.

It is another of the examples where the whole world does it one way and the USA does it another.

As an aside, I heard an American youtuber use the correct word last night on a car review video. First time I can recall it.

I'll go with the one who discovered and named it.

Sir Humphry Davy, a British chemist, discovered this metal in 1808. He also discovered and named sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, barium, and boron; lots of “ium” usage in those names, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Davy originally gave this element the name aluminum after the mineral alumina, whose name derive from the base alum which means “bitter salt” in Latin. This original spelling straddles the two competing versions we have today.

Well we American like to keep things to as few syllables as possible. It's all we can handle with the four contained in a-lum-in-um.

I thought aluminum is the commercial alloy, and aluminium is the pure element.
