On the one hand you are demanding that people better themselves and improve their skill set so they can earn more, and on the other hand you are arguing that non-teenagers/retirees working minimum wage jobs must be “retarded”. How do you expect these “retarded” people to improve their skill sets?
There is always going to be some percentage of the population that are incapable of doing more complicated jobs.
That's okay.
There are two groups of people who work minimum wages jobs beyond the obvious special cases of new teenage workers and retirees looking to stay active...and so the IQ reference is two-fold addressing those two cases.
There's no point in paying incapable people MORE when they are incapable of earning it...as they are the group that will get laid off first.
AND
There's no point in paying capable people MORE when they are unwilling to earn it....this shouldn't need explanation.
All wages are negotiated by the employee and the employer and entry level positions should be no different.
Having an arbitrary minimum wage just prices some people out of the work force.
If your labor isn't worth some arbitrary minimum amount, then you won't work at all.
So essentially, the government setting a minimum wage isn't just telling businesses that they have to pay at least "X".....
It also government telling you that if your labor isn't worth "X".......you won't have a job, because it's illegal for you to work for less than "X" ....even if you are willing to do so.
I was told that raising the minimum wage requires employers to simply raise every MW-earning person up to the level and then raise everyone else accordingly as well.
Now you're telling me that that's not the case?
That they are allowed to simply lay workers off or reduce hours/benefits? Maybe automate parts of the job in lieu of paying humans to do it? Or paying a small part of the workforce the increased amount, but significantly increasing their job duties?
they have 2/3 of the year off and make 50k. plenty of time to work another job. Also look at the **** poor job they are doing. Most kids these days are socially and mentally retarded. Teachers aren't doing their job when they actually are there.
How many kids do you actually know?
We’ve had our share of awful teachers and administrators; there are definitely teachers who should not be teaching. They don’t realize how their casually cruel comments can stick with a child for life. We’ve also had amazing teachers who have gone above and beyond to help and to make a difference in our kid’s lives.
Dems always promise affordable housing and low income housing. They get propositions passed for billions of dollars and maybe one or two apartment houses get built. Where did the rest of the money go? In my city, controlled by Dems for decades, there are luxury apartment houses all over the place yet I never see "no vacancy" signs.
“The typical worker who would be affected by an increase in the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by 2015 looks nothing like the part-time, teen stereotype: She is in her early thirties, works full-time, and may have a family to support. Our analysis of workers who would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage shows:
The average age of affected workers is 35 years old;
88 percent of all affected workers are at least 20 years old;
35.5 percent are at least 40 years old;
56 percent are women;
28 percent have children;
55 percent work full-time (35 hours per week or more);
44 percent have at least some college experience.”
“Rachel Sandoval is one of them. An elementary schoolteacher in the Denver Public Schools, Ms. Sandoval earns about $50,000 a year, enough to afford a condominium or a modest house in most markets. But not in Denver, where the median sales price for all homes was $410,000 in August, and where even condos routinely top $300,000 — a price Ms. Sandoval calls “not even close to feasible.” She said she was scoping out jobs in Texas, where houses are cheaper and pay is higher, and considering leaving teaching in search of a higher salary.”
50g to work 1/2 the year with like 6 weeks of vacation mixed in. She's got plenty of time to earn more money if she wants it. Plus none of them have even had to work for a year and a half.
1/2 the year, hah. I wish school was only open half the year and we got paid 50K for it... I work in education and I am damn good at what I do. We work nearly all year but you don't hear that. In the media. Instead it is comments like your baseless accusations of "Oh but they only work 9 months of the year" when educators do not and work more like 11. Only those that are 9-5 do and that is the minority of teachers. The majority work through vacations and often work on weekends and summer lesson planning. We may have a 180 school year and maybe 5-10 additional days, but in reality that is only 66 days less than the private sector when you consider 10 holidays a year. And mind you, I hardly ever take off...
As for your comment about kids, says far more about your character and quite frankly, I refuse to comment further on it because I'm taking the high road.
how much of the links are you reading and digesting before posting?
example - the two 70 yr olds in Boise - they are making a choice. Especially to rent a single-family home. They could get a townhouse ($1600-1700) or even just an apartment (~$1300).
I have to agree their story is not exactly gut-wrenching. They are renting a home for $ 2500/mo. One of them has to take out money from her IRA that "was supposed to be for traveling..."....oh, well....
Renting a SFH is a luxury and generally much more expensive than renting an apartment or condo.
Start with renting a room, then a studio and just keep working your way up. No minimum wage worker should be aiming for a 2br apt. And nobody should be assuming a fine life on minimum wage. Fill that other bedroom with another worker and there ya go!
I do acknowledge that some jobs have ridiculous requirements for ridiculous pay. Experience and/or education requirement require more than minimum wage.
