And that's precisely why we had to get out of that country.
The people of Afghanistan were never going to fight for or defend what they never wanted. Like someone else posted, you can't pay someone to do something they themselves have no desire to do.
We were never going to establish democracy or a western style government in Afghanistan. There's a reason why it's called the graveyard of empires, what made anyone think we ever could? All we were doing was wasting billions of tax payer dollars that mostly lined the coffers of the corrupt officials and did nothing to stabilize the country. We are not the world's police force, why should our country risk the lives of its own countrymen to fight and die for a people and country that could care less? It's like giving a homeless bum a monthly stipend to get help and become productive citizens again.
If we were truly that concerned about future terrorists establishing themselves in Afghanistan, then all it would take is a small contingent of our military personnel and advisors in Afghanistan, and the capability to do precision drone strikes against ISIS and the Taliban training camps and headquarters at any time. It's not like we haven't been bombing the hell out of that country these past 20 years, we have plenty of experience with it.
Certainly as we have seen today this whole withdrawal was FUBAR and that is solely on Biden. He will have to answer for this. But none of that negates the fact that we had to withdraw from Afghanistan at some point.
The afghan military has lost something like 100,000 people in the war, I think it is pretty insulting to say they haven't fought and sacrificed fighting against the taliban.
