Americans were lied to. They were told this would be a small scale invasion, not a twenty year occupation. And after billions in training and military hardware they are about to collapse.
Republicans and Democrats played you guys, sorry.
I couldn't care less if the entire Middle East ends up in rubble, including your beloved Iran.
20 years and we used everything except nukes and in just months the Tallies will retake Afghanistan...if we can't even defeat motorcycle riding goatherders what the bleep is going to happen when we take on China/Russia?
And how did "Russia" fare against those "motorcycle riding goatherders", again?
I read that China, which shares a small border with Afghanistan, is concerned. I bet, especially with all the military equipment that the Talliban is acquiring.
The surrounding countries should also be concerned.
Yet, if we had left 5 years ago, the result would have been the same.
I'm waiting for the Afghan pilots to start flying out of the country to safety. Probably happening now.
What was the alternative? Spending American lives for a people who didnt care enough to defend themselves?
Exactly.
The truth is, GW Bush thought he could show the Afghan people freedom, and light bulbs would light up, and they'd create a free republic. Those people have their culture, traditions, religion and their preferred way of life, which is inconsistent with creating a free republic. Turning the Mid East into functioning free people was the GW pipe dream. A free Afghanistan was supposed to create a domino effect.
In retrospect, once we chased out the Taliban we should have called it a success, regardless of whether we got OBL or not. I doubt that the domestic politics at the time would have allowed that, people wanted OBL dead. I know GW's critics would have flayed him alive if he pulled out without killing OBL first.
Afghanistan easy to conquer. Impossible to hold forever.
Awful 7th century culture there. Lots of friends that did time there.
This may be the most insightful thing I've read today. Culture matters, and their culture is not equipped to handle Western Democracy. Our problems in the US today are absolutely the result of our own degrading culture, going backwards towards tribalism.

Iraq prior to bush sr was a growing economy with a strong middle class.
America ruined that.
Then proceeded to remove any stability that region of the world had.
Taliban taking over isn’t a surprise. Wouldn’t be surprised if ISIS or another version takes up territory again.

It’s easier to defeat a standing army then a guerrilla ideology.

No surprise. Afghan Government is massively corrupt. Everybody knew once NATO Forces would leave the Afghan Military would collapse like a Paper Tiger.
The question I would like to be answered is where did the billions of dollars go that we spent over the last 20 years. Did it all go to corrupt Afghan politicians and Afghan Warlords?
Failure on a massive scale. This is worse than the Fall of Saigon in 1975.
