Nice going Biden. Another epic failure.

Yes, because keeping American troops there for eternity is a much better idea.

We had to get out at some point. Should have been a decade ago.

I'm expecting that at some point the equilibrium will tend to return to what it was before the West arrived. This time though we do have the capability to help fund whatever resistance arises and put more military pressure on a Taliban government.

This is its equilibrium. It can’t get away from it. Will always be a ****hole.

The question I would like to be answered is where did the billions of dollars go that we spent over the last 20 years. Did it all go to corrupt Afghan politicians and Afghan Warlords?

Failure on a massive scale. This is worse than the Fall of Saigon in 1975.
Clearly nothing was learned from that debacle.
Hubris is a terrible, destructive thing.

And things would have been different had Trump been re-elected?
Trump negotiated the withdrawal directly with the Taliban.
Who knows what he promised them.

What we do know is how effective his negotiations were with N. Korea re: their nukes and all.
Seems reasonable to expect similar results here.

For those who may have forgotten the original deadline/deal established by Trump:

“The May 1 timetable is part of an agreement the Trump administration forged with the Taliban in February 2020. Under that deal, the U.S. agreed to withdraw all its forces; in exchange, the Taliban promised to sever its ties with al-Qaeda and end its attacks on American forces. The Trump administration began a drawdown of U.S. forces, and about 2,500 U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan now.”

It’s not a foregone conclusion that Kabul will fall. We could easily prevent that from happening by supporting the Afghan military with air support based entirely outside of Afghanistan. Even if we refuse to help, the Taliban still might not be able to take Kabul.

So my prediction right now is that we are headed for a stalemate. The Afghan government will hold part of the country, and the Taliban will hold other parts of the country.

I’m not a pilot, but I’ve spent many years in the AOR. I would absolutely go back in if asked.

The reason being is because I believe if the Taliban take over, they will give safe haven to this generation’s Bin Laden, and there will be attacks on US soil again.
