The USSR leaves Afghanistan in the 1980's. Afghanistan reverts to its default setting of totalitarian theocracy.

The USA leaves Afghanistan in the 2020's. Afghanistan once again reverts to its default setting of totalitarian theocracy.

Simple at that. Why is anyone overthinking it?

Trump cuts a deal with the Taliban for US troops to get out, on conditions that 1) The Taliban break with Al-Qaeda and 2) The Taliban turn nonviolent. Neither occur! Biden gets out too quickly and abruptly, without further checking out the Taliban! Should both sides of the Presidency have followed the old Reagan philosophy of "Trust, but verify?"

Before the American interference in the Soviet Afghan war, it seems like Afghanistan was modernizing. Same with Iran before they decided to kick out the American interests.

Absolutely correct.

It is going to be a very long period of time until the next President.

I hope the world survives Joe Biden.

Because Trump is so unpredictable, killed Iranian General with a drone.
In the end, Taliban may takeover Alg, but it will not be in this fashion. I am not Trump support, but Joe really shxts the bed this time.
Back to the OP question, ya, I guess this crack will be the first crack of the US. Not because of the withdrawal, it is how the US do it.
