Nothing went wrong, it just happened too quickly. The US administration were probably pinning their hopes on the Afghan army collapsing a little bit later, maybe after 3 or so months. That would have given enough time for a more "co-ordinated" humanitarian effort, and for American public to forget about it.

The US foolishly thought it could bring western style democracy to people that didn't want it or understand it. We have to grasp the concept that not everyone desires what we have. And that's OK.

We could have lobbed cruise missiles from platforms at sea to run the taliban out initially. But then it would have been hard to clearly know when OBL was taken out. In hindsight putting boots on the ground caused us to stick around for the long haul.

For all the US military might, a guerilla conflict is our achilles heel.

I never expected Democracy in Afghanistan, I just expected for our President to not create a hostage situation and a humanitarian crisis in a matter of days and then dip out on vacation while refusing to answer any questions that weren't pre-approved.
But hey, I guess in your mind it's no big deal that the Taliban are using our military equipment to torture and kill people.
Sure the withdrawal is subject to criticism but I took this thread as more focused on what went long Afghanistan long term, plenty of threads on the withdrawal. I never expected to end well, we have been lied to by the military and leaders from both parties for years. Very short sighted to just complain about the last few weeks. Worrying about military equipment left behind, what about the lives lost and the $ Trillion wasted for the last 20 years.

How many more trillion dollars is it worth to us to sit in a miserable place like sitting ducks indefinately? We have better things to do with our time, money, and young lives than to waste it all in a s-hole country where the majority of 40 million Afghans are perfectly happy living in the middle ages. We cannot drag them into the 21st century. They had twenty years to get things organized but liked the status quo of corruption while we paid the bills.

This occupation was never going to have a different outcome. We could have left a decade ago. We could stay twenty more years. Our initial goals were met years ago but the mission became nation building. Our expectations were unrealistic and are never going to be met no matter how many years we stay there.

From another perspective: Taliban finally "liberated" Afghan people from imperialist powers. It is probably the first time in hundreds of years.
Now Afghans are fully governed by Afghans, not foreign powers.

Afghan people never asked Americans to be there. They were forced.

Sometimes "forcing" western policies on local people works, such as in Hong Kong.
Most times it does not work.

George W appeased them and then leader Pervez Musharraf, which was a terrible mistake. He ordered special ops not to cross the border and let Bin Laden run free. We needed Obama of all people to finish the task.

Biden, Trump, and W all effed up big time, as did Clinton by not taking Bin Laden in '96 when the Sudanese government offered him to us.

Obama appeased Iran and Russia, which was stupid, but he was the only recent President with a clue how to handle this.

If Trump could have done it, like he said he would, it would have already been done. But he couldn't. So Biden had to. There really is nothing more to the story; just wait and see what promise Biden will achieve next. My guess is Trump and his ilk will be having to pay some extra taxes very soon...
