Could the real story be that the adopters were prohibited from traveling and the dog was already scheduled for being put away...a schedule many 'kill' shelters have?

It's how they normally put down stray dogs. I mean, seems shocking that that's usually how they do it to an American or apparently Australians from Sydney. The Outback is the Outback though. 16,000 square miles with 2,600 people. Apparently they've got more people that know how to euthanize with a gun than euthanize with shots so that's just how they do things out in the Outback.
