Somewhere in this https://swprs.org/face-masks-evidence/ they talk about locations and how that effects covid cases. I could read through it and find for y'all but I'm too lazy. I'm on lockdown and I'm enjoying a glass of wine, so ...

Don't sarcasm her unit. You have no idea, what they are going through every night. She gave 22 years of her life, doing night shifts in ICU, being cussed out, spit at, threatened, having police and security involved, dealing with gods know what diseases, hundred fold more deadly than COVID EVERY night.
So save sarcasm for something else, please.
Forgive us ukrkoz, most of us are not aware of what goes on. We have 'no idea' as you put it. But thanks for bringing it to our attention. A dose of reality you might say!
Actually, did have a vague idea but have lost track.
No, ICUs are not filled with Covid patients. They are still dealing with the usual assortment of victims of car accidents, gun shots, knife wounds, heart attacks, strokes, ... Covid patients are on top of this.
If stats show that about 30% of current ICU patients are Covid patients, it would make sense that they are over capacity as few ICUs have 30% excess capacity.
They may be able to pull staff from other departments and juggle staffing for a few days for a fire, explosion, horrible car wreck ... but day in and day out, it would be a challenge.

Junkies? Drunks with DTs? What kind of ICU does your wife work at?
As far as I'm aware, patients in ICU are generally hooked up to IVs, monitors, catheters, ... and are generally so doped up they do little in the way of even moving, let alone spitting at the staff.
Are you sure your wife doesn't work in an Emergency Department?

People are "sarcasm"ing your post because your wife's ICU is an "N" of one.

"Arkansas recently joined Alabama as the second state to report that it has run out of ICU beds to treat critically ill patients while other states - such as Georgia, Mississippi and Texas - report that they are nearing capacity.
"ICU bed availability varies by state with Alabama reporting the highest capacity at 102 percent with 1,576 available beds, but 1,613 patients in need of care."
Arkansas has a full vax rate of 40 percent. Georgia is also 40 percent.
So please, continue to insist that "the vaccine doesn't work."
This thing goes in waves and NJ is starting to uptick now with the amt of new daily covid cases. I wouldn't be beating your chest just yet. NY is on an uptick - you are going to see things settle in the south and we'll be mandated once more come Oct here up North. NJ had 21 deaths yesterday, NY - 28 and PA - 36.

This is all these types of people know - I pass by this one's posts as he's too ignorant. Most people see hospitals overloaded and think every patient has Covid. Our hospital's capacity rate back in the 80's and 90's is 80% - most ICU units are due to the conditions you already mentioned. Have a multiple shooting or multiple car accident and all of a sudden we were over 100% because we didn't have enough ICU beds for these patients.
Fools follow the lib media with no real idea what situations are like in real time without Covid.

You also have to remember that many patients may have tested positive for Covid but aren't in the ICU because of Covid.

Your agenda aside, I'd like to know what the per capita number of ICU beds are in each state. If New Jersey has more ICU beds per capita, they might not run out of ICU beds at the same rate of Covid hospitalizations as Alabama.
So when confronted by an influx of new patients, hospitals, instead of stepping up to meet the treatment demand are complaining about the uptick as if they are somehow victim of it?
