I just want to see a timeline of what and when it was changed. For a while I did follow, but have now read so much stuff that I'm lost again. Something definitely went FUBAR, but am just trying to figure out how and when.
I think Biden views "the optics" of leaving by Aug 31st are far better for him then they would be if he continued this evacuation past that date. The pro-Biden news media will definitely move on, and forget about Afghanistan. See, all better.
If you are suggesting the optics won't get better if Biden completes the withdrawal by Aug 1st, sure they will. And if the optics get too bad, because US citizens and green card holders cry about being slaughtered. Biden will probably make concessions deals with the Taliban and their new friends, the Chinese (CCP), to get out the remaining US citizens.

I suspect the major issue came with the level of expected resistance from the ANA. I don't think anyone expected Kabul to fall as quickly as it did. Was that expectation of the amount of fight in the ANA reasonably misplaced? I don't know.
