Some U.S. fast-food restaurants are closing indoor seating areas or limiting hours of operation because of the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, according to franchisees.
McDonald's Corp had temporarily closed indoor dining at nearly all U.S. locations in early 2020, but it reopened 70% by last month. The global burger chain said on July 28 that it was on track to open nearly 100% by Labor Day - barring any COVID-19 resurgence.
But last week, McDonald's instructed its franchisees on steps they should take to re-close their dining rooms in areas where the Delta variant is rapidly spreading, according to internal company materials seen by Reuters.
McDonald's is certainly not helping prevent blood clots from COVID after all... Under normal circumstances it probably contributed to thousands of blood clots and blocked arteries each year.
And, unfortunately, that's exactly what they should do. I will not dine indoors at any restaurant until it is safe to do so, and it is not....in many/most areas today.
We have several fast food restaurants around here that have again closed (or never reopened) indoor dining, not because of Covid directly, but because of staffing challenges. Not having to have people man the front counter or clean up a dining room is more people you can put towards faster production or running food out to people waiting. Chick-fil-a in particular has been constantly tinkering with their drive thru process and are pretty darn efficient at it. I think people will be more drive thru inclined even after Covid has been accepted as something akin to the yearly flu. I also think you'll see new restaurants either eliminate or shrink indoor dining in favor of having greater drive through efficiency.
One of our local Chick-fil-a restaurants is closed right now for renovation, and they appear to be really gutting it. I'm curious to see what they do with it. Eliminate the kid's play area and double chicken production is my hope.

Some Chik-Fil-A places already had no indoor seating pre-COVID.
