It would save us millions of barrels of oil, wear and tear on vehicles and roads, not to mention billions we spend on gasoline and diesel - and reduce CO2 emissions. Back in the day, I had a Datsun B210 that struggled on overpasses but it got better than 40 mpg at 55. Most people drove 65 or so, but that is better than 85 we have now.
cars are designed differently today than back in the 70's... my Ford Fusion Hybrid gets its best mileage at 66mph

I'll be pragmatic and say 65 would be a good speed limit for limited-access highways. 60 for divided 4-lanes that aren't limited-access, and 55 for other 4 lanes and 2 lanes.
If that's not fast enough, get a plane ticket.
If life is so empty you have to run around like mad trying to fill it with things, then take time to ponder priorities.
It's okay to slow down and enjoy the ride. You'll be happier when you get there... or at least have better blood pressure.

For those concerned about the environment, set the example and ride a horse.
That might be another complexity that we don't often see (or having put together yet). Why do we leave children in cars? Is it because we have "been taught" to multitask our minds? Or to combine our driving trips together?

If so (say), then if we have to drive slower, will this complicate the background problem with harsher results?

I don't know. Admittedly, some may say, "Tamara, stay on the subject! We are only talking about this here!" but it seems we tend to be specialists in things and get lost in the big picture.

Again, I mention the obvious.

How many dweebs that live nice suburban or upscale lives believe that rules are actually followed.

I mean drugs are illegal. You're not supposed to have illegal guns right? You're not supposed to punch or stab people or rape them of gee gosh golly.....speed!

Every poster here that drives breaks the speed limit every single time they drive. Get real.

No. Look how well that turned out for NYC. Every street in all 5 boroughs now has a 25 mph speed limit, and they overtook LA for worst traffic in the nation, a record LA held on to for over 30 years. Meanwhile traffic deaths have only increased and so has pollution.

America is not Europe.

Proud card-carrying dweeb here. Yes, I’m some parts of the country it’s not uncommon to see people just going the speed limit.

Traffic deaths have increased each time highway speeds are raised. Yet we’re still stubborn enough and dumb enough to keep raising them. It has nothing to do with 25mph in NYC.
With all the safety crap on cars, the laws of physics still apply.
