From 139 countries due to threat of rabies supposedly.
As if the owners would not vaccinate for rabies..
I recall a soldier who took in a stray pup and had so much red tape to bring the dog to the US...he finally got the dog to the US with much resistance.
All the more reason that the government should have stepped up and figured out how to get those animals back home to their owners. Instead they just abandoned those pets at that airport like garbage.

Why would anybody who was on any kind of temporary assignment in a war zone get a pet?
I cannot remember any time in my entire life when we did not have at the very least a cat and a dog in the house. Sometimes we had a couple each. I would no more leave one behind than I would abandon a child. Our furry family members live to be 15-20 years. We just had to have our last cat put down due to inoperable tumors.
At my age any new pet will vastly outlive DH and me. SO we have none. Were I to be working and living in a war zone the last thing I would is get a pet.
You care about abandoned pets? Go to NOLA. By now they are probably feeding on trash. In Katrina they were eating dead people floating in the flood water.
I doubt that they were told that their pets were not also coming. Why would they bring their pets to the airport only to abandon them?
Why? Because if they're like many pet owners the thought that they couldn't take their pets on an emergency, cobbled together at the last minute, evacuation flight never entered their minds.
This makes my blood absolutely boil. So we gave large amounts of weapons to terrorists, handed Russia and China a country to take over and gave terrorists a new base where they can build up to attack the US homeland...and we abandoned man's best friend?
" The Kabul Small Animal Rescue, a veterinary clinic and rescue in the Afghanistan capital, had at least 130 dogs under their care and an additional number of cats but weren’t able to get them out of the country when numerous private charter aircrafts couldn’t gain access to the airport."
Why'd you say these were military animals ?
