Many McDonalds around here are having the same staffing problems, so now they close at 6pm every night. Quite a few other fast food places are doing the same thing when they cannot get employees to work.

I wonder why they are not going to automation, like so many assumed they would do?

Bravo! This is great! I had a big paper route starting in 7th grade. Taught me wonders about work ethic, dealing with people and responsibilities. Taught me early that I’m the master of my own ship and if I wanted something it’s time to roll up my sleeves and get to work!

Good for Medford.
We started wage work at 14 and you could make more than farm field work. (early 60s, summer ag work, 50 hours, 10 hr days, before any overtime ).

Up here in Redmond WA, McDs offering $16.50. Trouble is single people are more content with their dogs than hooking up and making babies.

I also did that, 83 papers delivered on a big balloon tired bike. Then at age 14 I got a job for $1.25/hour peeling potatoes at a fish & chips shop, stayed there to age 18 with eventual promotion to head fry cook.
It's no big deal to get good grades while working part time, in my case high school GPA 4.64, working some evenings and all weekends, usually about 20 hours a week.

Today the 14-15 year olds are more likely to work at places like McD, once they hit 16-17 it becomes too much of an embarrassment to work there.

They did go to automation, just not everything. Predominantly self ordering kiosks and drink dispensers.

AWFUL job, but the tuition thing is nice if you play the game well. $12 here tho. Weird how there seems no rhyme or reason to where garbage jobs pay more. I'm in high cost NJ and the going rate for garbage jobs is the state minimum $12.
I did Home Depot in Watchung for a couple months between jobs. $11 per hour. Plus they limit you to about 20-25 hours a week so they don’t have to give benefits. LOL.

My 15 year old is working. I’m not sure NJ is 16.

Then that's the fault of the parents. They should be instilling in their kids that any legal job is a good "start" to getting some work history.

But that seems the way of it these days. When I was a kid, growing up in an affluent community, we kids baby sat, mowed lawns (yes, the girls too), shoveled snow, worked at the library (the only place that had an age 14 start), and so forth. Now parents are conveying to their kids that they're "too good" for menial labor. It's all part of the entitlement mentality.

Basically.

But let the market work itself out. I don’t associate with such “businesses”.
